Stimulated Emission

A photon incident on an excited atom or molecule can stimulate it to emit another photon and relax to a lower energy state. This occurs when the incident photon has an energy closely matched to the energy gap between excited and ground states of the atom. The photons emitted are identical in phase and color, effectively doubling the incident power.
