Scattering Mechanism
There are a number of mechanisms that cause light to be scattered, some of these depend on the size of the particles in the material relative to the wavelength of the light, e.g. Rayleigh scattering, while others involve the interaction of optical energy with vibrational energy (phonons) and are nonlinear scattering mechanisms, such as Brillouin scattering or Raman scattering.
