Pumping
The deliberate introduction of energy into a system is referred to as pumping. This is most relevant to systems where energy at short wavelength is pumped into an active medium to excite it to emit light at a longer wavelength. This may produce highly coherent light in a laser, introduce gain into a signal in an amplifier, or produce a broadband output from an ASE source.
