Phase
The relative orientation in time or space of the maxima in the electric field of a light wave is described as the phase. If two beams have maxima at the same point in space they are described as in-phase, whereas if one has a maxima while the other is at a minima they are in anti-phase (out by 180°); this is the fundamental principle of interferometry.
