Polarization Mode
The orientation of electric and magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave determines its polarization. In a fiber, the orientations these can take are referred to as modes, so one polarization mode might have electric and magnetic fields along x and y axes respectively (the z-axis being along the fiber length), while another (the orthogonal mode) would have magnetic and electric fields along x and y axes respectively.
