Elliptical Clad Fiber
One design of HiBi fiber. An elliptical cladding of boron doped glass around the core causes an asymmetric stress on the core, which leads to stress induced birefringence. With a larger cross-section of the cladding material on the major axis of the ellipse, the stress induced index change is larger here and this is the slow axis of the fiber.
