Silica (pure SiO₂) can be doped with germanium (Ge), increasing the index of the doped glass. The resulting homogenous mixture of silica and germania is referred to as germanosilicate glass. The core region of most single-mode and PM fibers are germanosilicate and other fibers may also incorporate germania in their core composition.
