Fast Axis

The fast axis of a birefringent fiber is the axis in which the index of refraction is lower. In accordance with the relation below, light in this axis moves faster than light in the slow axis.

c= speed of light in a vacuum

n = index of refraction

vn = velocity of light in medium of refractive indexn
