Raman Scattering

Backscatter of light at a shifted frequency. Interaction of light (photons) with high energy vibrational quanta (phonons) having a frequency comparable with the optical frequency. Light is shifted by a corresponding amount up (or down) in frequency depending on whether phonon energy is absorbed from (or released into) the molecular lattice.
