A filling gel commonly used inside a FIMT (Fiber In Metal Tube) in downhole cables to fill empty space surrounding optical fibers in the metal tube. For ease of use, the gels are thixotropic in nature. Hydrogen scavenging filling gels, such as Sepigel™, have high levels of hydrogen absorption - which better protects the fiber from hydrogen ingress.
