Fibercore is a market leader in the field of ‘Specialty’ optical fibers. Originally a technology spin-out from the University of Southampton and now celebrating almost 40 years in business, we export more than 95% of our production to around 50 countries Worldwide.  Our high-end optical fibre products are used as key components in a diverse range of industrial sectors including automotive, biomedical, aerospace, telecommunications, energy and fundamental research, for applications such as driverless cars, surgical robots, aircraft stabilization and fiber lasers. 

The effective operation of the drawing tower is an important part of our manufacturing capability.  Based at Fibercore House and reporting to the Production Manager, this full time, hands-on shift role is responsible for preparing, setting up and drawing preforms into optical fiber before it is transferred into Test.

The role will suit you if you are detail conscious, self-motivated and take pride in high levels of accuracy in your work, being able to maintain concentration over long periods of time.

Reporting to the Production Manager the role will include:

  • Setting up preforms on the draw tower
  • Changing dies
  • Performing coating changes
  • Monitoring results and output throughout the process
  • Filling in forms and maintaining logs, spreadsheets and databases
  • Ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the equipment, trouble-shooting as required
  • Identifying and conducting process improvements on existing and new products under supervision
  • Glass preparation including stretching and sleeving, rounding and fire-polishing
  • Daily and weekly routine maintenance of equipment
  • Adhering to all health and safety requirements


To be considered for this position, we are looking for someone with a good basic education including 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), grade C and above, to include Maths and Science.  You will also need to be able to understand written and verbal instructions in English, and be computer literate, familiar with Microsoft Office applications.

As this job involves climbing up and down 20m of steps multiple times a day, the successful applicant will need to be physically fit enough to operate the tower and be willing to work under a minimum amount of supervision, often alone. Previous experience in manufacturing and / or shift work, and first aid training would be advantageous.


Salary range: £22,500 to £27,000 depending on experience, plus 20% shift premium


Shift pattern: Week 1 (days) – Monday 0600-1800; Tuesday to Thursday 0550-1800

                           Week 2 (nights) – Monday to Wednesday 1750-0600 following day
